Close to 600 students will take to the streets on Friday, September 26th, 2014 when Chelmsford Valley District Composite School (CVDCS) hosts a Terry Fox Day in partnership with Chelmsford Public School and the Greater Sudbury Police Service.
The day will begin at CVDCS at 8:45 am with an assembly in the school gym. Following the assembly, secondary school students, staff and members of the Greater Sudbury Police Service will head outdoors to run or walk along a five-kilometre route in the Chelmsford area.
At 9:30 am, the secondary students will arrive at Chelmsford Public School where they will join with 248 elementary students to complete the run back to the high school where all students will come together for a culminating assembly and barbecue.
The assembly will include a video presentation featuring Bill Vigars who will share stories from the Marathon of Hope. Bill Vigars was the Director of Public Relations and Fundraising for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Ontario Division when Terry Fox was making his way across Canada.
“The focus of our Terry Fox Day is on fun and fundraising as we honour a national hero and contribute to cancer research,” says Pamela Potvin, Principal of Chelmsford Valley District Composite School. She commends the school’s senior physical education class for organizing the event.
“Students recognize the importance of giving back and are going the extra mile to ensure this day is special.” She adds: “Terry Fox remains a positive and powerful role model for students. We are pleased to pay tribute to him as we commemorate a cause that was near and dear to his heart, a cause that has touched most of us in many ways.”
Teachers from both CVDCS and Chelmsford Public School will help raise money and school spirit through various activities, including shaved heads, dyed hair and pies in faces. In addition, students from CVDCS have been selling dedication shoes at the local mall, an annual tradition that will continue in the school in the week leading up to the event.
