The Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving (OSAID) chapter at Lasalle Secondary School is spearheading a variety of educational activities for students to highlight the dangers of drinking and driving.
The activities will kick-off at a school assembly on Monday, May 30, 2016 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Students will hear from guest speakers Kim and Jaymie-Lyne Hancock, mother and sister of 18-year-old Dean (DJ) Hancock. His life was tragically taken in August of 2014 when his vehicle was struck by an impaired driver. Students will also have the opportunity to perform a variety of activities while wearing Fatal Vision Alcohol Impairment Simulation Goggles.
Throughout the week, during lunch, students at Lasalle Secondary School will learn about other forms of dangerous driving through a series of interactive activities.
While Monday’s theme is drinking and driving, on Tuesday, the OSAID group will focus their attention on driving while under the influence of drugs.
On Wednesday, students will learn about the dangers of texting and driving. Thursday’s focus will be on all other forms of distracted driving, for instance, driving and eating.
“Our group of OSAID students are dedicated to ensuring their peers know and understand their responsibility while driving,” says Lasalle Secondary School Principal Maureen McNamara.
She adds: “We are very proud of our students for working together to deliver these vital, proactive messages that speak to the health and safety of our entire community.”
