Monetville Public School receives funding for new community gardens

Two new community gardens were added to the school grounds at Monetvile Public School thanks to a SpeakUp Project Grant funded by the Ministry of Education’s Student Voice program.

The gardens were built in partnership with the Sudbury & District Health Unit and the French River Community Gardens to promote responsibility and to teach food literacy to students. The gardens will also provide vegetables and herbs for school-based initiatives including the school’s annual Fall Harvest Feast as well as the breakfast and snack programs.

In the spring, a class of Grade 7/8 students constructed the raised garden beds, while others planted and maintained seedlings in their classrooms, which were transplanted to the gardens on Monday, June 13, 2016.

Working in the garden are, from left, Dylan Lane, Grade 8, Jessica Jones, Grade 5 and Kailey McCracken, Kindergarten.
