Winning formula: Nesbitt students head to provincial math competition
Success in mathematics continues to add up for the students at Carl A. Nesbitt Public School. They captured Gold and Silver medals in the Greater Sudbury Math Olympics on Saturday, May 3rd, and, for the sixth consecutive year, will represent Northern Ontario at the All Ontario Math Olympics in Peterborough on May 30th and 31st.
Gold team members include Grade 8 students Zac Smith and Courtney Shallah and Grade 7 students Alex Palkovits and Meghan Wismer. The silver team is made up of Grade 8 students Chris MacDonald and Chelsea Bourget and Grade 7 students Rachel Belanger and Alex Chellew. The Greater Sudbury Math Olympics featured teams of Grade 7 and 8 students from Rainbow District School Board and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.
"We commend Carl A. Nesbitt Public School for continuing to lead the way with more impressive results in mathematics," said Rainbow District School Board Chair Judy Hunda. "They have the winning formula and we wish them well as they proceed to the provincial competition." Carl A. Nesbitt Public School students also soared to victory in this year’s Pascal math competition, placing first in Zone 62.
Jim Sutherland, a retired Principal from Rainbow District School Board, has been coaching the Nesbitt Nitros for more than a decade. "Under Mr. Sutherland’s guidance, Nesbitt students have honed their Math skills at a competitive level," says Director of Education Jean Hanson.
She adds: "His love for math has been infectious with students. He truly inspires them to achieve their full potential, evident by their six gold medals in six consecutive years." Rainbow District School Board recognized Jim Sutherland for his efforts. He received an Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Co-Curriculum Program in 2006.
