Student from China raises money for earthquake victims

Sammi Tam, a Grade 12 student at Sudbury Secondary School, is enlisting the support of her classmates and school staff to raise funds and awareness for the victims of the recent earthquake in China. Donations will go to the local Red Cross for distribution overseas.

"Sammi, who is graduating this spring, has successfully faced the challenges of secondary school while learning English as a Second Language," says Principal Paul Camillo. "She is now spearheading this important fundraising drive as part of the relief efforts for her native country."

Sammi Tam’s hometown may be far from the disaster zone, but she is reduced to near tears every time she sees a newscast or reads about the terrible tragedy brought on by the earthquake. 

"Like many of us, Sammy is experiencing a sense of helplessness in the face of this tragedy," says Principal Camillo. "When she approached the students and staff at Sudbury Secondary School for assistance, as good global citizens we were quick to help out."

Students and staff will collect donations for the Red Cross over the next two weeks. Donations can be made at Sudbury Secondary School, 85 Mackenzie Street in Sudbury.

"Classes are also focusing on this event to explore the impact of natural disasters and the role that individuals and organizations play in the relief process," says Principal Camillo.

Over 50,000 people have been killed in the China earthquake, including many children at school when the earthquake struck.
