Residents of L’Arche Sudbury joined students at Alexander Public School on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 to clean up the schoolyard for spring, including student Presley McCarthy and L’Arche Sudbury resident, Colleen Young.
It was one of many activities that took place in Rainbow Schools for Earth Day.
Founded in 1982, L’Arche Sudbury supports some 30 individuals with intellectual disabilities by engaging them in neighbourhood activities with the motto “changing the world one heart at a time.”
“We not only wanted to create awareness about the importance of treating our earth with kindness, we also wanted to teach children about the abilities of people with intellectual disabilities,” said L’Arche Sudbury Community Leader Jennifer McCauley. “By getting to know someone who uses a wheelchair, or who might look or talk differently, we break down barriers and embrace acceptance and inclusion.” She added: “We are all human beings first with a responsibility to each other and to this earth.”
“We were grateful to have members of L’Arche Sudbury assist with the clean up,” said Denise Goodmurphy, Principal at Alexander Public School. “Students took ownership of the schoolyard and made new friends in the process.”
L’Arche Sudbury is committed to creating an open, inclusive and compassionate community where every person is valued and can make a contribution. In Sudbury, the organization operates three homes, a vocational program and a Supported Independent Living program.
