Alexander students capture top honours in Youth Writing Contest

Five Grade 6 students from Alexander Public School garnered top honours in the Wordstock Sudbury Literary Festival’s Youth Writing Contest. The winners were announced at the festival kick-off on Friday, June 19, 2015 at Sudbury Secondary School’s Sheridan Auditorium.

Students could submit poetry or short stories in one of two categories; Pre-teen for students 12 and under and Teen for those ages 13 to 18. Both categories required two pages of poetry or a 1,500 to 2,500 word short story with a connection to Capreol.

Alexander Public School student Liam Siemann captured First Place in the Pre-teen category for his submission “Mommy’s Here,” a story of a boy who is haunted after a tragic train accident claimed the life of his mother.

Second Place went to Ted Leblanc for his tale “All I See Is Red,” a story that details an encounter between a student who is being bullied and a friend who trades favours for revenge.

Kael Perras took home Third Place for “Deadlands,” a story about a boy’s journey to a military base during a zombie apocalypse.

Honourable mentions went to Emily Binks for “The Key That Killed 5 Hearts” and Thea Este for “Pocketknife.”

Cash prizes were given to the top three writers in each category. The top five submissions will be published in Mat Del Papa’s new book, Creepy Capreol Jr.

This is the second annual Workstock Sudbury Literary Festival, which began as a special project of the Sudbury Arts Council in 2013.
