Algonquin Road P.S. students sail through to Provincial Cardboard Boat Races

Grade 7 students from Algonquin Road Public School will compete at the Skills Canada – Provincial Cardboard Boat Championships in Waterloo on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.

Daphne Williams, Morgan Proulx, Erin Coles, and Rebekah Thom will vie for gold against 33 of Ontario’s best in elementary cardboard boat racing.

To qualify, the team garnered first out of 31 teams from across Northern Ontario at the regional races in Espanola on January 31st, 2018.

Captain Erin Coles paddled down the pool in 16.82 seconds, the fastest time for elementary teams in the province. The team earned an overall score of 91.5.

For the competition, students are given two hours to build a boat on site using only duct tape and cardboard. Boats are judged on speed and weight, while teams are judged on teamwork, planning, decor and safety.

“We are extremely proud of our Grade 7 students in the cardboard boat races,” says Algonquin Road Public School Principal Cathy Nursall. “On behalf of the entire school community, I extend best wishes as they compete at the provincial championships. Go tigers!”
