Grade 7 students from Algonquin Road Public School took top honours at the Skills Canada – Ontario Provincial Cardboard Boat Championships in Waterloo on Wednesday, March 7, 2018.

Erin Coles, Madison Huntington, Rebekah Thom, Daphne Williams and team mascot Morgan Proulx competed against regional champions from across the province. They captured Gold among 32 teams.

For the competition, students were given two hours to build a boat on site using only duct tape and cardboard. Boats were judged on speed and weight, while teams were judged on teamwork, planning, decor and safety.

“I can’t believe our decorations turned out as well as they did,” said Madison Huntington.

Added Rebekah Thom: “Everyone had something to contribute. We all worked hard together and it paid off.”

Erin Coles completed the 25 metre race in 16 seconds. “Before I got into the boat, I felt more excited than nervous. I was pumped!” she said. She posted the fastest time and now holds one of the Skills Canada top ten elementary speed records.

After the race, the team competed in the weight challenge. The boat held an impressive 584 pounds and was one of the top contenders in that component of the competition.

“I never expected to learn robotics when I joined the cardboard boat team,” said Daphne Williams. “Being a mascot and cheering on my team was fun,” added Morgan Proulx.

Teacher/Coach Darren Foy said it was a pleasure to guide the highly motivated and focussed competitors. “The students are already making plans to defend their title next year,” he said.

For her part, Algonquin Road Public School Principal Cathy Nursall was beaming with pride. She congratulated students on their impressive victory. “First place in Ontario. Way to go Team Algonquin! You have given us one more reason to celebrate student success.”
