April 22nd and 23rd: Students gather for Stand Up, Speak Out Conference

Stand Up! Speak Out! is the theme of the 2013 Students Leading Students Conference being presented by the Rainbow District School Board Student Senate on Monday, April 22 and Tuesday, April 23, 2013. The conference will take place from 9 am to 2 pm at the West Residence Conference Hall at Laurentian University.

Guest speakers include Andy Thibodeau on “Share Your Care” and Wes Williams on “Stick to Your Vision”. Both speakers will share their experience with setting goals and striving to achieve them. The conference will bring together approximately 90 students from Rainbow secondary schools.

“We have invited students to this conference to help guide them on their way to having a successful career in leadership,” says Michael Niven, Student Trustee with Rainbow District School Board and Chair of the Student Senate. “Our purpose is to give student leaders tools and experience to set them in motion towards achieving the goals and dreams they have for their schools and beyond.  We hope that they will come away with the necessary stepping stones to carry out their projects as student leaders now and in the years to come.”

“Students play an important role in creating healthy school environments where all young people feel welcome and valued. This conference will inspire students to be good role models and make a difference,” says Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. Director Blaseg commended Rainbow District School Board’s Student Senate for organizing and presenting this year’s Students Leading Students Conference, a key component of the Ministry of Education’s Student Success Initiative.

Chaired by Student Trustee Michael Niven of Manitoulin Secondary School, the Student Senate provides a regular forum for students to come together to network and share ideas. The Student Senate includes Michaela Paradis and April Perrin of Sudbury Secondary School; Chloe Derrenbacker and Cody Hartwick of Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School; Roberto Bagnato and Cassandra Mazzuca of Lockerby Composite School; Alex Luopa and Michael Kaufman of Lively District Secondary School; Lynn Richards and Kristina Galipeau of Lasalle Secondary School; Jamey VanHorn and Michael Niven of Manitoulin Secondary School as well as Jerrika Rydall and Jaymie Muncaster of Espanola High School.
