April 25: Students challenge problem-solving skills at Math Olympics

Grade 7 and 8 students will come together this Saturday, April 25th to participate in the Sudbury Regional Mathematics Olympics. Eleven teams of four students from the Rainbow District School Board and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board will challenge their problem-solving skills in team, individual and pair events. The competition takes place at Lasalle Secondary School (second floor) from 9 am to noon.

The Northern Ontario Mathematics Association (NOMA), a group of dedicated educators who volunteer their time and energy to support math education, is presenting the event.  NOMA is the local chapter of the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education.

“The Sudbury Regional Mathematics Olympics gives students an opportunity to use their mathematical skills in a fun way,” says NOMA President Carol Lemmon. “It’s great to see so many students on a Saturday morning happy and excited to do math. This event fosters a sense of team work, an appreciation for mathematics, and an opportunity for collaboration, competition, and camaraderie for each participant.”

The top two teams from the Sudbury Regional Mathematics Olympics will qualify to attend the provincial event in Peterborough on May 29th and 30th, where mathletes from across Ontario will compete. NOMA sponsors the local teams that move on to the provincials by covering the cost of their registration fees.
