From Monday, April 28th to Friday, May 2nd, the Roots and Shoots Club of Sudbury Secondary School will hold its annual battery drive to help save the environment.  Students, staff and the public are encouraged to bring in their old batteries for recycling.  (No car batteries please.)

On Tuesday, April 29th, 28 Sudbury Secondary School students will take part in the PISA Student Assessment Program, an international assessment of reading and writing skills.

Grade 8 and 9 parents/guardians are invited to Literacy Matters, Numeracy Counts – An EQAO Evening at Sudbury Secondary School on Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 at 7 pm. The session will focus on the why, who, when, where, and how of the Grade 9 assessment in Mathematics and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). Literacy Matters, Numeracy Counts is being sponsored by the School Council at Sudbury Secondary School with funding from the Ministry of Education’s Parent Engagement Office. The first 30 parents in attendance will receive an EQAO tool kit to take home.

The Visual Arts students at Sudbury Secondary School invite you to "come and bare your mind to art!" at its annual student art show. Exposed! takes place in the cafeteria (College Street entrance) with the opening reception on Wednesday, April 30th from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. The exhibition will continue Thursday, May 1st from 8:45 am to 2:30 pm and Friday, May 2nd from 8:45 am to 11:45 am.

The Sudbury Secondary School Drama Department is proud to present an Evening of One Act Plays on Thursday, May 1st, 2008 –  Shakespeare’s Ladies by A. Witty, The Insanity of Mary Girard by Lanie Robertson, and Never Swim Alone by Daniel MacIvor. These Sudbury Secondary School productions received 11 awards at the recent Sudbury District Sears Drama Festival. Using Earth Day as a springboard, students will build toys and other creations from objects and recycled materials.  Submissions will be judged later in the week to determine the three most imaginative creations.  Students will also continue their yard cleanup efforts.

Building on the school’s successful Aboriginal Literacy Day on April 22nd, students will share rich literature with an aboriginal theme.

On Monday, April 28th, students will enjoy a springtime treat while helping raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

On Thursday, May 1st, students from the Grade 1/2 class will have their annual Grandparents’ Day.  Grandmothers, grandfathers and other relatives will be invited to the school to read with students and share in their excitement about literacy.

On Friday, May 2nd, Grade 5 students will participate in the annual Heritage Fair at Laurentian University.

On the morning of Friday, May 2nd, students in the junior grades will participate in a Go Green presentation. Assiginack Public School will present "An Evening of Musical Theatre" on Thursday, May 1st at 6:30 pm in the school gymnasium. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children under 12 (who are not in the musical). Tickets can be purchased at the school. Proceeds from the musical will go towards the school’s playground improvement. During the intermission, the Grade 6 and 7 students will host a bake sale.

Assiginack Public School will present two performances of the musical during the school day. The first performance will take place on Wednesday, April 30th at 12:30 pm for elementary school children on Manitoulin Island. Assiginack received a special grant from the S’Cool Life Fund to help fund the musical. Admission for students, therefore, is free. The second performance, also for Island elementary students, will be presented on Friday, May 2nd at 10 am. Parents are invited to the school to watch dress rehearsals, set development and staging on Monday and Tuesday. Cast bios and photos will be displayed on Thursday and Friday. A cast party will take place Friday afternoon for the students. All students are involved in the school musical.

Churchill Public School will energize young minds through outreach to the global community. The school will continue to raise money for children in need in different countries. In recent years, students sponsored a school for special needs students in Mexico and supported the Osu Children’s Library in Ghana. This year, Churchill Public School is supporting children in South Africa through the Spirit of Mandela Children’s Fund.

Students at Churchill School put lots of "fun" in fundraising while lending their support to good causes.  The school’s Student Parliament has organized a week filled with dress up, BBQs and lots of activities. For example, on Thursday, May 1st, the school will host a pancake breakfast and "PJ" day and on Friday, May 2nd at 9 am, Churchill Public School will celebrate the arts with a school wide Talent Show.

Also on Thursday, May 1st, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Copper Cliff Public School will host a Family Numeracy Night focusing on pre-school, primary, junior and intermediate math skills and ways for parents to support their children at home.

During Education Week, students at C.R. Judd will be working on their first ever Musical Mania contest. Teams of students will perform an excerpt from a recognized musical on stage in front of a live audience.  Students will be able to lip-sync to the music, but are responsible for preparing their own choreography, costumes and stage sets.  Proceeds from the sale of tickets to this event will benefit the Capreol Bread and Roses Foodbank. The contest will take place at the school on June 5th.

C.R. Judd is also preparing to participate in KIds’ Biz, an opportunity for students from Grades 1 to 8 to compete for customers (and prizes) as they develop a local business.  Each year, dignitaries from the Northern Credit Union and students studying business at Confederation Secondary School meet at C.R. Judd to judge which businesses are the most successful in terms of marketing, sales, etc. This year’s Kids’ Biz event will take place on June 6th.

In addition, Education Week will feature a Ministry of Natural Resources presentation on being "Bear Wise".

The animals do not feel like they are important because they do not know who they are. When they discover their identity, they are overjoyed and take their rightful place in the world.

Grade 4 and 7 students will join the community’s Fish and Wildlife Club at Sheguiandah Bay to learn about the survival of the walleye and caring for our ecosystems. The activities will take place at Sheguiandah Bay from 9:30 am until 11:30 am on Wednesday, April 30th and Thursday, May 1st. The public is welcome.

The Grades 4, 5 and 6 classes will present their science fair projects in the gym on Friday, May 2 from 1:20 pm to 2:30 pm. The public is invited to celebrate learning through Science at Little Current Public School.

On Thursday, May 2nd, 2008 students at Markstay Public School will take part in the 3rd annual Exceptional Needs Awareness Day from 9 am to 2 pm. Students will attend a variety of workshops that will make them more aware of various special needs. Parents and community members are welcome to join the students in learning more about specific challenges such as vision and hearing impairments, physical disabilities, autism, learning disabilities, ADHD, depression and anxiety and cerebral palsy. Staff and students at Makstay Public School look forward to this informative day to help raise awareness and energize minds to the many different challenges students face in their lives.

During Education Week, Grade 4 to 6 students will host the school’s first annual Artists Trading Cards Fair in the gym.  Over the last two months, students have designed mini works of art and will have the opportunity to showcase and exchange their collection of cards with other artists.

Grade 6 students at Valley View Public School are co-ordinating a Litterless Lunch program. Students are visiting each class on a daily basis and weighing the garbage. The aim is to reduce the amount of garbage created during each lunch period.

All grades will participate in a Literacy/Numeracy Triathlon, with 30 minutes of reading, running and a daily physical activity routine.

Grade 7 students from Valley View Public School are participating in the Millenium in Motion Speaking Tour and Leadership Workshop at Sudbury Secondary School on Tuesday, May 6th. In this multimedia presentation, Free the Children speakers will share their experiences working in local and impoverished communities around the world in order to educate students on how they can contribute to a better world.

All students at Valley View Public School are participating in a Music Day activity.  The school band will teach and perform songs for all grades.

During Education Week, students will participate in Wembley’s version of "Are You Smarter Than a Canadian Fifth Grader".  Trivia questions during morning announcements will be based on the Ontario Curriculum (Grades 1 to 5).

On Wednesday, April 30th, Senior Kindergarten students and parent volunteers will enjoy a Learning Through Trails hike.  Learning Through Trails is a program that integrates the Ontario curriculum with physical activity.  A representative from Learning Through Trails will visit the class on Tuesday, April 29th to introduce the program to students.   Along with experienced guides, the class will hike near Wembley Public School on a section of the trail along Junction Creek.

On Tuesday, April 29th, the Wembley Public School Battle of the Books team will participate in a mini "Battle" at Jessie Hamilton Public School.  This practice event will help students prepare for the competition being hosted by the Greater Sudbury Public Library on May 21st at the Radisson Hotel.  The Battle of the Books promotes a love of reading in the junior grades.

On Thursday, May 1st from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm, Grades 1 to 8 students will participate in a school-wide activity with a math/science focus.  The entire student population will be divided into cross-grade teams.  Each team will have a parent leader and eight students. The teams will complete a Rube Goldberg Challenge. The teams will use common material to develop a system to accomplish a specific task based on a precise set of criteria.  Prizes will be awarded for team spirit, participation and creativity.
