Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School will host its first Poetry Invitational on Tuesday, April 29, 2014. Contestants will bring their dramatic flair to the stage at 7 pm in the school cafeteria.
The Poetry Invitational involves two competitions – Poetry Slam and Poetry Recitation.
Poetry Slam is an individual or group performance where contestants have three minutes to recite a poem on any subject, in any style. Routines must include elements of poetry, theatre, performance and storytelling. No musical instruments, pre-recorded music, props or costumes are allowed. Points are awarded based on content and delivery.
Poetry Recitation involves memorizing and performing a poem written by an established author. Individual poems must be 10 to 30 lines and group poems must be 60 lines. No props are allowed and the poem cannot be a song. Points are given based on delivery and accuracy.
Interested students can sign up for the Junior Group (Grades 7 to 10) or the Senior Group (Grades 11 to 12). Entry deadline is Friday, April 25, 2014.
Judges for the event include Sudbury author Hally Willmott, Sudbury Poet Laureate Tom Leduc, and CBC Points North host Jason Turnbull.
