April 30: Students take part in Math, Science and Technology Olympics

Grade 7 and 8 students in Rainbow Schools will participate in the Math, Science and Technology Olympics on Thursday, April 30, 2015 at Science North in Sudbury.

"Over 140 students will be taking part in this event, which has become an annual tradition for Rainbow District School Board," says Director of Education Norm Blaseg.  "Students will have an opportunity to apply what they are learning in the classroom in an enjoyable and creative way.” He added: “We are fortunate to have Science North in our community. Students have access to leading edge learning right here in our own backyard.”

In the morning, students will answer questions to test their knowledge and skills in math, science and technology.  "A dedicated team of teachers from Rainbow District School Board have worked diligently to prepare challenging questions and activities related to Science North exhibits and the Grade 7 and 8 math, science and technology curriculum," says Superintendent Judy Noble.  "At the end of the day, teachers will tally the results to identify the winners."

In the early afternoon, students will participate in a technological design challenge. "This is an on-site event prepared and evaluated by the staff at Science North," says Superintendent Noble. "It usually involves building a structure of some sort with simple materials such as straws and popsicle sticks. There is a catch. The structure must be used to accomplish a task."

The event will end with an awards ceremony that parents/guardians and members of the public are welcome to attend. The awards ceremony will begin at 2:30 pm in the Vale Cavern.

"All participating students receive a t-shirt with the Math, Science, and Technology Olympics logo," says Superintendent Noble. "They receive the t-shirts in advance so they can personalize them for their particular team. Team spirit is evident when students gather at Science North in tie-dyed t-shirts or ones painted with their school colours. They are ready and eager for their math, science and technology challenges!”
