What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?
Board bars David Popescu from future debates and school events
Rainbow District School Board Chair Judy Hunda and Director of Education Jean Hanson today announced that Independent candidate David Popescu will not be invited to participate in any future election debates that may occur in Rainbow Schools. He will also not be welcome to attend any school events.
“During a recent debate at Sudbury Secondary School, Mr. Popescu made comments that elicited a strong reaction, and rightfully so,” said Rainbow District School Board Director of Education Jean Hanson.
“We do not tolerate statements that promote hatred or violence in our schools,” she said. “Such comments are contrary to what is expected in a civil society. There is no justification for this.”
It has been the Board’s practice to include all candidates in election debates.
“Debates are held to give students an opportunity to learn more about the candidates and their respective views,” said Director Hanson. “In a democracy, learning more about candidates is part of the decision-making process.”
She added: “Mr. Popescu’s comments, however, were extreme, unacceptable and demand action.”
Director Hanson commended the staff and students of Sudbury Secondary School for their response to the situation.
“We cannot predict what candidates will say in public forums,” she said, “but we can certainly take measures to ensure that what happened at Sudbury Secondary School with this particular candidate never happens again.”
