Board congratulates Heritage Fair award recipients from Rainbow Schools

“Sudbury: A great place to race”, by Grade 6 student Riley Ransom of MacLeod Public School, is one of two projects that will be showcased at the Provincial Heritage Fair in Toronto on June 10 and 11, 2012. The project was selected following the 16th Annual Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair. Close to 1,000 elementary and secondary students from Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin attended the exhibition and cultural celebration held on May 4th, 2012 at Laurentian University.

Rainbow District School Board Chair Doreen Dewar applauded students for bringing the past to life through their dynamic Heritage Fair projects. “Students researched a number of topics and, in the process, shared stories about their family, their community and its rich history. All participants are to be commended for their efforts.” She added: “We congratulate award recipients and wish Riley Ransom all the best at the Provincial Heritage Fair.”

"I am excited to go to Toronto,” said Riley Ransom. “Southern Ontario is lucky to have a lot of great hills and terrain. I’m sure they have no idea that Sudbury is such a great place to race."

Riley Ransom is a proud member of the Adanac Ski Club and an accomplished ski racer.  This year, both she and her sister Lexi represented Northern Ontario at the Provincial Championships in Collingwood. Riley researched the history of ski racing in the Sudbury area. Her project features a timeline designed as a chairlift and highlights important historical information.

During her research, Riley discovered that MacLeod Public School has connections to the rich skiing heritage of the Sudbury area. Many teachers and students, both past and present, have played a part in the sport. Jeff Laberge, a parent and coach with the Adanac Ski Club, is not only a former student, but he is also one of the architects of the new MacLeod green school. A highlight for Riley was the opportunity to interview Jeff Dickson, a paralympic gold medalist from Sudbury. Riley thanks Peter Dopson, Jeff Dickson, Paul Kelly and David Ghent-Kyle for assisting her with her project.

The Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair is a community event organized and sponsored in partnership with a number of local organizations, including the Rainbow District School Board, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, Laurentian University and the City of Greater Sudbury. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) was the new community partner at this year’s Heritage Fair.
