Board congratulates winners in the Math, Science and Technology Olympics

Over 140 students in Grade 7 and 8 from Rainbow Schools participated in the Math, Science and Technology Olympics on Thursday, April 12th, 2012 at Science North in Sudbury.

Students worked in teams as they tested their knowledge in math, science and technology in a question and answer challenge.

The teams also participated in a construction challenge.  The challenge involved creating a ski jump made out of popsicle sticks and straws. The structure had to be free-standing and allow a gravity-propelled ping pong ball to travel and land in a plastic bin.  The team whose ball travelled the greatest horizontal distance was the winner.

"The Math, Science and Technology Olympics is an excellent opportunity for students to apply what they are learning in the classroom in a fun and creative way,” said Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. “We congratulate all participants and winners for their outstanding efforts in this competition.”

He added: “We would like to thank the dedicated teachers from Rainbow District School Board and the staff at Science North for organizing this event.”
