The popular jazz group Broche à Foin will headline a community concert on Saturday, October 16, 2010 in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust. The concert, featuring the release of Broche à Foin’s latest CD, will take place at 8 pm in the Sheridan Auditorium at Sudbury Secondary School, 85 Mackenzie Street.

Tickets, at $20 for adults and $10 for students, are available at Guitar Clinic (765 Barrydowne Road), Octave Music (Cedar Pointe Plaza), Prom Music (255 King Street), and Records on Wheels (56 Elm Street). Tickets will also be available at the door.

The members of Broche à Foin – Philip May, Jean-Yves Bégin, Peter Scherzinger, Gary DiSalle, and Joe Reda – are all seasoned music professionals with an extensive repertoire, ranging from jazz and blues to country and classical. They have performed with well-known local artists such as Patricia Cano, Stéphane Paquette and Philip Candelaria, and have appeared at the Northern Lights Festival. Broche à Foin has also shared the stage with many Canadian jazz greats, including Jeff Healey, Holly Cole, Ed Bickert, Reg Schwager, and Richard Underhill.

The group was originally formed by Philip May (drums) and Jean-Yves Bégin (saxophone), who were later joined by Dick Van Raadshooven (bass) and Peter Scherzinger (trumpet). At that point they decided to focus on creating and performing strictly original music. Soon after, they recorded their first CD "Hommage à anonyme" and played across northern and southern Ontario to positive reviews from the Toronto Star and other media.

Broche à Foin has expanded in recent years to include guitarist Gary DiSalle and bass player Joe Reda. Following a summer of intense rehearsals and recording, the quintet performed to great acclaim at this year’s Jazz Sudbury Festival. They are very proud of their new CD release, entitled "People We Have Known".

The Joan Mantle Music Trust allocates funds to school music programs in Rainbow District School Board, one school at a time.  This ensures that there is a tangible improvement in the condition of equipment in an entire department, allowing for students to achieve more in their musical studies together.

“To date, $65,000 has been raised for the purchase of new instruments in Rainbow Schools, ranging from clarinets and saxophones to trombones, tubas, flutes and more,” said Rainbow District School Board Chair Tyler Campbell. “The community’s ongoing generosity in support of music education will allow Rainbow students to reap the rewards for years to come.” He added: “We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported and continues to support the Joan Mantle Music Trust, enabling us to revitalize music programs in our schools.”

Joan Mantle was a long-time educator who made an immense contribution to music education locally. She passed away on June 9, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.
