A Grade 3 student from Central Manitoulin Public School is off to Kapuskasing this weekend to defend her title in public speaking. Amber Wahl of Tehkummah will compete in the Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking Competition in the District H and K Primary Division on Saturday, April 2, 2011. The winner of this competition will advance to the Provincial Championships in Orillia.

Rainbow District School Board Chair Tyler Campbell congratulated Amber for her outstanding achievement. “We wish Amber well as she moves on to the next level of competition,” he said. “She is a wonderful ambassador for Rainbow Schools and we are certainly very proud of her.”

Amber placed first at the Royal Canadian Legion District H Primary Division Public Speaking Competition held in Sturgeon Falls on March 20, 2011. She competed against speakers from Wawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Espanola, Manitoulin, Sudbury, North Bay and Parry Sound. District K includes Timmins, New Liskeard, Kirkland Lake, Hearst and Kapuskasing.

And the topic of her speech? Speeches. Amber says writing speeches takes "hours and hours of thinking and writing to come up with something clever, witty and educational.”

Amber is looking forward to going to Kapuskasing this weekend, even though it is a 10-hour drive from her home on Manitoulin Island. "I get to stay in a fancy hotel and will have a chance to see many new towns along the way," she says.
