Checkmate: Rainbow students take part in Elementary Chess Tournament

Princess Anne Public School students Kyla Turner, left, Arta Kiani, Preston Turner and Rory Bulman practice for the Rainbow District School Board chess tournament taking place on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at the Local 6500 Hospitality, Conference & Education Centre.

The chess board is the new chalk board for students in Rainbow Schools who are honing their skills for the 4th annual Elementary Chess Tournament on Thursday, April 11, 2024.

The full-day event will bring together some 240 students from Grades 1 to 8 to play chess at the Local 6500 Hospitality, Conference & Education Centre in Sudbury (formerly United Steelworkers Hall).

Chess offers students many benefits, including the opportunity to build on analytical, strategic and concentration skills. Chess also improves self-regulation, patience, logic, creativity, memory and self-confidence.

“Chess is a wonderful way to challenge students,” says Director of Education Bruce Bourget. “It not only nurtures skills for learning, it also helps to foster a growth mindset which is important in all subjects.”

He adds: “I commend and thank staff for organizing opportunities for students in the spirit of friendly competition.”

Students from 13 Rainbow Schools are participating in the event, including A.B. Ellis Public School, Algonquin Road Public School, Chelmsford Valley District Composite School, Lansdowne Public School, Lasalle Elementary School, Lasalle Secondary School, Lively District Secondary School, MacLeod Public School, Markstay Public School, Northeastern Elementary School, Princess Anne Public School, R.L. Beattie Public School and Valley View Public School.
