Churchill P.S. hosts Third Annual Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life event

On Friday, May 13, 2011 over 450 students, teachers and parents from the Churchill Public School community will rally together to help raise funds by holding their Third Annual Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life at the school.

The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life involves participants who take turns walking, running or strolling around a track. Proceeds are used to fund cancer research and community services for people living with cancer and their families.

Grade 8 student Alyssa Murray said that the Relay For Life is a “Chance to remember those who have died from cancer and to show support for people who are fighting cancer.”

The first lap of Relay For Life is dedicated to cancer survivors, who are invited to walk the Survivors’ Victory Lap. For the Churchill Public School community, this part of the Relay For Life has special meaning, as they will celebrate the battles that young students and other members of their school community have won against cancer. Participants also light luminary candles around the track to commemorate survivors and those who have lost their lives to cancer.

Erin Burns, organizer of the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life event, said: “Cancer has touched everyone’s lives at the school so the event has significant meaning to us.  The students are learning essential character education as well as the importance of volunteering and getting involved.”

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is to eradicate cancer and to improve the quality of life of people living with cancer.
