What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?
Community leaders go back to school
Principal for a Day Class of 2006 Rainbow Schools
Community leaders in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin are going back to school on Wednesday, October 18th, 2006. It’s all part of Rainbow District School Board’s annual “Principal for a Day” program, a key component of the Student Success Initiative.
“The primary purpose of Principal for a Day is to link schools with the communities that they serve,” says Rainbow District School Board Chair Dena Morrison. “Community leaders will spend the day learning about the multiple roles that school principals play, from instructional leadership to the management of school facilities. In the process, they will gain a better understanding of what’s happening in Rainbow Schools.”
“Our community is keenly aware that we need an excellent educational system to prepare our future workforce,” says Director of Education Jean Hanson. “By engaging community leaders in public education, we hope to mobilize the expertise and resources of our community to develop powerful partnerships to improve learning opportunities for students in Rainbow Schools. We want to give community leaders as realistic a view as possible of a day in the life of a principal.”
During Principal for a Day, community leaders will participate in a variety of activities. Some may visit a class, review daily attendance reports, attend staff meetings, give morning announcements, meet the Student Council or tour school grounds. Others may visit a special education class or resource room, monitor late arrivals, attend an athletic or band practice, talk about discipline issues or engage in dialogue around budgets, policies, procedures and The Education Act.
All participants will learn more about the Student Success Initiative, a provincial priority focused on four areas – literacy, numeracy, pathways (independent living, work, apprenticeship, college and university) and community, culture and caring. The goal of the Student Success Initiative is to inspire success for all students in the pathway that they choose.
“The Student Success Initiative has a foundation built on discovering and improving the individual strengths of each person,” says Student Success/Learning to 18 Leader Anna Barsanti who co-ordinates Principal for a Day on behalf of Rainbow District School Board. “When we focus on success for each student, we help students see the value of staying in school,” she says.
