Construction of a new green school on the MacLeod Public School site is proceeding on schedule. “We are currently accepting registrations for the 2013-2014 school year,” says Principal Michelle Walton. “We are eagerly anticipating the opening of our new school which will provide exceptional learning facilities for children and families in the South end of Sudbury. Our new green school will be ready for occupancy in 2014.”

Parents/guardians can register their children by contacting MacLeod Public School at 705-522-8040. MacLeod Public School will host a Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) orientation session for children who are starting Junior Kindergarten this fall as well as their parents/guardians on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 1:30 pm and Thursday, May 23, 2013 at 5:30 pm. The WTK session for JK registrants at MacLeod Public School will take place at the MacLeod Annex at 310 Laval St. in Sudbury.

The new MacLeod Public School will accommodate approximately 600 students from JK to Grade 8 in approximately 60,000 square feet. It will feature a daycare for preschoolers as well as a Best Start Hub. The play area for children will be expanded to approximately 174,000 square feet.

Green features in the new MacLeod Public School include a displacement ventilation and heat recovery system, radiant floor heating, high insulation values in windows, walls and floors, and energy efficient plumbing and lighting fixtures. The roof will be constructed to allow for the installation of solar panels at a later date.

The main entrance of the school will be located on Walford Road. A separate bus layby from Laval Street to Walford Road will greatly improve traffic flow in the area. There will also be 93 parking spaces on site.

During construction, JK to Grade 2 students as well as the daycare remain at the Annex on the current MacLeod site. Grades 3 to 8 students have been relocated to the former Wembley Public School (the MacLeod Wembley site).

The new MacLeod Public School is Rainbow District School Board’s third green school. Valley View Public School opened in the fall of 2007. Walden Public School opened in the fall of 2009.
