Countdown to Kindergarten: School starts early for Rainbow’s youngest learners

School was off to an early start for Rainbow District School Board’s youngest learners.

More than 350 children beginning school this fall participated in Kindergarten Camp – a three-day program held from August 26 to 28, 2026 at many Rainbow elementary schools.

Under the guidance of qualified teachers and designated early childhood educators, children attended school three hours a day to get a preview of routines and activities.

Children engaged in inquiry-based learning and play, including co-operative games and outdoor activities.

“Kindergarten Camp introduces children to the wonderful experiences that await them,” said Bruce Bourget, Chief Executive Officer of the Rainbow District School Board. “They become familiar with staff and surroundings, meet classmates, and get excited about starting school.”

“It’s been a wonderful experience,” said teacher Abby Doucette. “The children are engaging with each other while developing important communication and co-operation skills.”

She added: “The program provides a welcoming introduction to school and helps children feel comfortable, confident and ready to learn.”

Kindergarten student Abigail Colilli enjoyed making new friends and becoming familiar with her school setting. “Today, I am excited,” she said. “I like looking at books, and snack time. My new friends are very nice.”
