Countdown to Kindergarten: School starts early for youngest learners

School was off to an early start for Rainbow District School Board’s youngest learners.

Close to 480 children beginning school this fall took part in Kindergarten Camp, a four-day program held from Monday, August 28, 2023 to Thursday, August 31, 2023.

Under the guidance of qualified teachers and designated early childhood educators, children attended school three hours a day to get a preview of routines and activities.

Children engaged in inquiry-based learning and play, including cooperative games and outdoor activities.

“Kindergarten Camp introduces children to the wonderful experiences that await them,” says Director of Education Bruce Bourget.

He adds: “Children become familiar with staff and surroundings, meet classmates, and get excited about starting school.”

When asked what her favorite Kindergarten Camp activities were, Edie Lippold said: “The marble run is really fun. They go so fast. And I like dressing the babies and pushing them in the stroller.”

Zev Ratner enjoyed the experience. “I like everything,” he said. “I like games, and friends, and the sand.”

If you have not registered your child for school, there is still time to do so.

The first day of school is Wednesday, September 6, 2023.
