Cyril Varney Public School in New Sudbury literally walked the talk on
World Car Free Day, earning top marks in the Rainbow District School
Board’s Car Free Challenge.
Principal Ron Hodkinson left his home in Wahnapitae at 3 am on Tuesday,
September 22, 2015. He arrived at his office at 8 am having walked 26
kilometres in five hours.
The school parking lot, usually packed with vehicles, had plenty of spots to spare as staff biked, car pooled, took transit and walked to work.
“Congratulations to the staff of Cyril Varney Public School who have, once again, demonstrated environmental leadership and been exceptional role models for students,” said Director of Education Norm Blaseg.
He added: “World Car Free Day provided another opportunity for us to focus on education for sustainable development. We will continue to encourage our students and staff to think globally and act locally as the school year progresses.”
Cyril Varney Public School is a 2015 recipient of the Rainbow District School Board Go Green Globe Award. Some 30 staff and students serve as members of the Eco Team who promote waste minimization, energy conservation and schoolyard re-greening.
The schoolyard was transformed into an outdoor classroom with generous contributions from the community, including enhancements through the Ugliest Schoolyard Contest.
