E-Waste Events: Community invited to recycle old computers and electronics

Do you have old computers, telephones or televisions at home or work? If so, mark your calendar and plan to drop them off for recycling.

Rainbow District School Board is teaming up with eCycle Solutions to host e-waste events in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin during Earth Month.

There will be a drop off depot in the parking lot at Manitoulin Secondary School, 107 Bay Street in M’Chigeeng, on Saturday, April 21, 2012 from 9 am to 3 pm.

Drop off depots will be set up in the parking lots at three schools in the Sudbury area on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 9 am to 3 pm – Lockerby Composite School, 1391 Ramsey View Road in Sudbury; Carl A. Nesbitt Public School, 1241 Roy Street in New Sudbury; Confederation Secondary School, 1918 Main Street, Val Caron and Lively District Secondary School, 265 Fifth Avenue in Lively.

There will also be a drop off depot at Espanola High School, 147 Spruce Street in Espanola on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 9 am to 3 pm.

“Last year, Rainbow District School Board collected 75,412 pounds (34,206 kilograms) of electronic equipment at four community e-waste events held during Earth Month,” said Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “We hope to surpass this amount and invite everyone in the community to join with us in diverting waste from local landfill sites.”

The following items can be recycled:

•    Computers, laptops, netbooks, tablets, iPads, e-Readers

•    Mice, keyboards, webcams

•    Printers, scanners, photocopiers

•    Phones and fax machines (cordless, touchtone, rotary included)

•    Projectors (includes overhead)

•    Monitors, televisions  (CRT, LCD, plasma, rear projection, wooden console)

•    Networking products (routers, switches, patch cables, wall mounts, network connectors, antennas, circuit boards, memory chips, etc)

•    Cell Phones, digital cameras, bluetooths and PDAs

•    Security surveillance equipment (home and commercial systems)

•    Media Players (IPod, MP3, CD and VHS)

•    Game systems and controllers, Leap Frog, Vtech (games included)

•    Radios, speakers, amplifiers, electronic music equipment, record players, cassette players, alarm clocks

•    Cables – any kind

•    Battery backups

•    GPS with accessories

•    External storage media devices (external hard drives, USB drives, floppy disks, CD/DVD/Blue Ray)

•    Power tools, commercial and industrial electronic equipment

eCycle Solutions is guaranteeing 100 per cent data destruction for all devices containing personal information.

Please do not bring hazardous waste, furniture, appliances, TV stands or other non-electronic waste.
