EQAO: Rainbow Board makes gains in OSSLT results
Rainbow District School Board made gains on EQAO results reported in the 2014-2015 school year. Seventy-six percent of students were successful in the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). This is up by one percentage point over the previous year.
“While provincial results declined by one percentage point, we increased,” said Rainbow District School Board Director of Education Norm Blaseg. He attributed the results to the hard work of teachers who have made literacy a priority in all subject areas.
“Embedding literacy across the curriculum demonstrates that good reading and writing skills are essential to all learning,” he said. “It also supplements the explicit instruction that students receive in English.” Director Blaseg thanked educators for their ongoing efforts and congratulated students on their achievement.
A total of 970 students in the Rainbow District School Board’s ten secondary schools in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin wrote the OSSLT for the first time on March 26, 2015.
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test assesses the reading and writing skills that students are expected to have learned in all subjects by the end of Grade 9, as outlined in The Ontario Curriculum. Students must successfully complete literacy requirements to obtain an Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
