Ernie Checkeris Public School has received a national award from Physical and Health Education Canada (PHE Canada) for its quality physical education program.  PHE Canada has acknowledged the school, its teachers, and students as being excellent role models for all other Canadian schools, by honouring them with the National Diamond Recognition Award.

“Active bodies, build active minds,” said Terry Moss, Principal of Ernie Checkeris Public School. “Physical education provides students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to live healthy, active lives.  We are proud of the efforts of our teachers, under the leadership of Gaetane Restoule and Michel St. Laurent.  They have been instrumental in engaging our students during physical education time and through intramural activities.”

The National Diamond Recognition Award is the highest level Quality Daily Physical Education award a school can receive. To qualify for the Diamond Award, the school must provide all students with an exceptional program of physical education instruction every day of the school week, for the entire school year. The school must also provide a minimum of 150 minutes of physical education instruction each week and meet all additional criteria set out in the award application form.

“At Ernie Checkeris Public School, intramural sports are played during the nutrition break and students participate in daily physical activity,” adds Moss.  “Our enthusiastic teachers and staff ensure that students are fully engaged. Our goal is to teach our students healthy habits that they can use throughout their lives.”
