Two students from Lasalle Secondary School have been honoured for their writing skills as they get set to graduate this month.
Laurel Ashick-Stinson won the Influential Women Aspiring Achiever Scholarship for her essay about an influential woman in her life. She wrote about her Girl Guide leader and mentor, Andrea Jenney. Besides inspiring her career path, Ashick-Stinson said Jenney has also helped her to become a better person, pursue her passions and live life to the fullest. Ashick-Stinson received $2,000 for her postsecondary education. The essay contest was open to Grade 12 female students from across Northern Ontario.
Soheila Homayed won the silver medal in the WordStock Sudbury Youth Literacy Contest for her essay entitled Sudbury, “Forever My Home”. “The world is huge,” she wrote. “There are 196 countries, 7 continents and about 2,469,501 cities. There are 7 seas and over 7 billion people in which make up the population around us. Yet, with such extensive opportunity to travel, it is in this town where I would like to raise my family for I know they will become humble and wholesome people and I know that they will get the memorable childhood as I had, and continue to have right now.”
“We congratulate Laurel Ashick-Stinson and Soheila Homayed for their outstanding achievement,” said Lasalle Secondary School Principal Jeff McKibbon. “We wish both students continued success as they pursue their postsecondary studies in the fall.”
