Rainbow District School Board will host its 18th annual Technological Skills Competition on Wednesday, February 26th at Cambrian College in Sudbury and Thursday, February 27th at the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 2486 in Azilda.

Some 165 secondary students will test their skills in 2D and 3D character animation, aesthetics, AutoCAD, auto-service technology, baking, cabinetmaking, carpentry, coding, electrical installations, home and team building, heavy duty equipment, horticulture and landscape design, mechanical CAD, photography, prepared speech, small powered engines, tv/video production, welding, workplace safety and VEX robotics.

This year’s elementary competition has doubled in size from last year with over 350 students participating in seven categories, including character animation, construction, LEGO® Mechanical Engineering, LEGO® Robotics, Technology, TV/ Video Production and Workplace Safety.

Students will vie for an opportunity to compete at the Skills Ontario Competition on May 5 and 6, 2025 in Toronto.

“Tech Skills gives students an opportunity to showcase their talents in various sectors, which could lead to potential careers in the trades,” says Jennifer Burns, Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Co-ordinator with Rainbow District School Board. “Students make connections with community partners and engage in innovative learning experiences that foster self-confidence, problem-solving and creativity. Participation also fuels their passion for the trades.”

The baking competition will take place at Espanola High School, aesthetics will take place at Confederation Secondary School, and horticulture and landscape design will take place at Lively District Secondary School.

Carpentry competitions, including Home and Team Building and Carpentry – Team of 2, will take place at the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 2486 in Azilda.

Judges will include staff from Rainbow District School Board, Cambrian College and members of the Carpenters Union.

Participants will have an opportunity to take home medals and certificates of achievement to celebrate their success. The awards ceremony will begin at 3 pm at both locations. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.

Rainbow District School Board salutes the many staff members who work diligently to make this event possible every year and thanks Cambrian College and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 2486 for their support.

The Board also acknowledges the generosity of this year’s title sponsors Lopes Ltd. and the Coniston Industrial Park, as well as the many community partners who contribute financially and/or provide new tools and transportation for students to compete at the provincial competition.
