February 28: Jazzworkz concert features Steve McDade with the Borealis Quartet

Jazzworkz will present its first Jazz “Clubdate” Concert on Friday, February 28, 2014 at 8 pm at La Fromagerie on Cedar Street. The concert, in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust, will showcase recording artist Steve McDade on trumpet and flugelhorn, performing with the Borealis Quartet featuring Allan Walsh, Tony Simpkin, Brian Quebec and Jack Broumpton.
Steve McDade – Jazz Trumpeter / Flugelhornist

Steve McDade began playing the trumpet at the age of 12, touring Europe and North America to participate in band competitions. Two years later, he was featured as a soloist at Hamilton Place in Hamilton, Ontario. He played professionally throughout the area and entered the Humber College Jazz Studies program when he was 16 years old.

Steve McDade has been a member of Manteca and The Boss Brass since the 1980s, touring the world with both bands and playing on their Grammy and JUNO Award-winning recordings. He has performed in major jazz festivals all over the world with Rob McConnell and The Boss Brass and as a member of The Rob McConnell Tentet.
He has played and recorded with some of the biggest names, ensembles, bands, and orchestras on the arts and entertainment scene including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Doc Severinsen, Diana Krall, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, The Toronto Symphony, Manhattan Transfer, and worked and recorded with Doc Kupka of Tower of Power.
As a commercial and jazz trumpet player, Steve McDade has played in a variety of Motion Picture soundtracks, recorded hundreds of radio and television jingles, commercials and themes for a lengthy list of important TV shows and musical theatre productions including Les Misérables, Miss Saigon, Chicago, The Rat Pack, and many others.
The Jazzworkz Concert Series was created by producer Jack Broumpton to celebrate the expanding growth and influence of jazz music in the Sudbury community. “I am excited to present our first “clubdate” concert for those people who enjoy a more casual “jazz club” atmosphere,” he added.
Tickets are $10 and are available at La Fromagerie (5 Cedar Street) and at Hair To Live For in the Cedar Pointe Mall. Tickets are limited, so pick them up soon.
About the Joan Mantle Music Trust
The Joan Mantle Music Trust was established in the fall of 2008 to help refresh, modernize and revitalize school music programs in the Rainbow District School Board.
The Trust allocates funding for musical instruments and equipment to selected schools on a rotating basis. The Trust also accepts the donation of new and used musical instruments and allocates them to schools in need. This ensures that there is an ongoing improvement in the condition of musical equipment throughout the Board, allowing students to achieve more in their musical studies together.
Joan Mantle dedicated many years to music education in Rainbow Schools. She passed away on June 9, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.
