Festive Events in Rainbow Schools 2009

A.B. Ellis Public School
On Monday, December 14, 2009 A.B. Ellis Public School will host its Christmas concert at 7 pm. The concert band will perform as well as the Northern Brass Choir and Music Teacher Stefanie Huot. Intermediate students will perform a rendition of “The Grinch” as directed by Grade 8 teacher Paula Varey.  Edith Presseau, Grade 3 teacher, will lead the student choir as they sing Christmas carols.  The entire community is welcome to come out and help with the school band fundraiser and Christmas celebration.

On Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 1 pm, parents and the community are welcome to attend the school Christmas assembly where each class will perform a skit or song to celebrate the season.

Adamsdale Public School
Adamsdale Public School will celebrate the holiday season with an Olympic themed concert on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 1:45 pm and 6 pm. Parents/guardians and other family members are encouraged to attend the afternoon performance, where possible, to maximize space in the gym in the evening.

Algonquin Road Public School
CANCELLED – Algonquin Road Public School will celebrate the holiday season with a variety of festive activities.  Students from JK to Grade 5 will present Christmas concerts on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 from 10:30 am to 11:45 am and 12:45 pm to 2 pm.  

RESCHEDULED – The Algonquin Road Public School Christmas concerts have been rescheduled to Monday, December 14, 2009 from 10:30 am to 11:45 am and 12:45 pm to 2 pm. Everyone is welcome!  

On Thursday, December 10, 2009 the Algonquin Choir will reach out to the community and perform at St. Joseph’s Villa.  On Friday, December 11, 2009 they will perform live on EZ Rock 105.3.  

Students in Grades 6 to 8 will host a Christmas potluck luncheon on Thursday, December 15, 2009 from 11:30 am to 1 pm.  Parents and guardians are invited to join their children for lunch in celebration of the upcoming holiday season.

Alexander Public School
Alexander Public School will celebrate the holiday season at the North Pole this year.  On Tuesday, December 15, 2009 the primary grades will perform in a concert from 4 pm to 4:45 pm followed by the junior and intermediate grades from 7 pm to 8 pm. The Alexander Gators will continue to Pay It Forward throughout the month of December by donating Christmas baskets to families in need in the community.  Donations (wrapped gifts, money, or non-perishable food) will also be collected during the evening.

Assiginack Public School
Students at Assiginack Public School will participate in a Christmas concert on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 7 pm. The Grade 6/7 class will host a bake sale and a Touch and Take Table. Please bring a canned food item for the Food Bank and/or silver for a silver collection for student activities. Santa will visit as well.

Central Manitoulin Public School
Students from Grades 1 to 6 will attend Sleeping Beauty at the Sudbury Theatre Centre on Thursday, December 10, 2009.  

The school will host its annual Christmas concert on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 6:30 pm.  A non-perishable food item for the Manitoulin Family Resources’ Christmas Basket Campaign would be appreciated.  

A Family Skate will be held on Thursday, December 17, 2009.  Please visit centralmanitoulin.rainbowschools.ca for specific times.  

On Friday, December 18, 2009 at 9:15 am, the entire school will participate in a Christmas sing-a-long in the gym.  Everyone is welcome to join.

Charles C. McLean Public School
During the afternoon on Wednesday, December 16th, 2009, parents, family and friends are invited to join their children and staff for a skating party.  

The Grade 4 class is gearing up for its Medieval Feast where they will enjoy fare of the times and entertainment.  (Rumour has it, they will be visited by some real medieval knights!)

On Friday, December 18th, 2009, the school day will begin with a Christmas Carol Sing. Friends and family are welcome to join in the fun at 9 am.

Chelmsford Public School
The Chelmsford Public School Choir will perform at 3 pm on the MCTV Christmas Telethon on Saturday, December 5, 2009.  

CANCELLED – Chelmsford Public School will host its Third Annual Christmas Family Sing-a-Long featuring the school choir.  The sing-a-long will take place in the gym at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, December 9, 2009.  Canned goods and non-perishable food item donations are greatly appreciated.  Everyone is welcome to join and get into the holiday spirit!  

On Friday, December 11, 2009 at 10 am, the Chelmsford Public School Choir will share their voices with the community as they perform for the seniors at Meadowbrook Retirement Home.  They will then head to the Place Bonaventure Mall at 1:45 pm to continue to spread Christmas cheer.  

Students will also celebrate the holiday season with their Christmas concert at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 and Thursday, December 17, 2009.

Copper Cliff Public School
Copper Cliff Public School will host its annual concert, "Is Santa Smarter?" on Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at 6:30 pm in the school gym.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  There is no admission, but a non-perishable food item for the Sudbury Food Bank would be appreciated.  At the concert, the Copper Cliff Public School Hand Chime Choir and the band will perform under the direction of Valerie Whitehead.

On Monday, December 14, 2009 at 1:30 pm, the Senior Kindergarten students and their parents will have a sing-a-long with Jeff Wiseman.  

Cyril Varney Public School
Cyril Varney Public School will celebrate "The Sounds of Christmas" on Thursday, December 10, 2009 with an afternoon performance at 1:30 pm and an evening performance at 5:30 pm.

Ernie Checkeris Public School
Students at Ernie Checkeris Public School from JK to Grade 3 will sing en français for the Christmas season.  Parents and guests are welcome to attend the Christmas Concert on Monday, December 14, 2009 at 1 pm, with a second performance at 6 pm.

Gatchell School
Gatchell School will host an afternoon of Christmas merriment.  Family and friends are invited to join them on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 for a concert beginning at 1 pm.  After the concert, guests will be treated to a delightful assortment of baked goods, prepared by the students.

Lansdowne Public School
Everyone at Lansdowne will celebrate the holiday season with two concerts taking place on Monday, December 7, 2009 and Tuesday, December 8, 2009. Both concerts will take place from 11:45 am to 12:45 pm and will feature students from JK to Grade 8.  Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.  Students will also participate in a food drive for the Neighbourhood Action Project of Sudbury.  Students will collect non-perishable goods until Friday, December 18, 2009.

Larchwood Public School
Students will participate in the local Lions Club Food Drive until Friday, December 18, 2009. The annual Larchwood Public School Christmas Tea will take place Sunday, December 6, 2009 from 12 pm to 3 pm.  Larchwood invites everyone to come for refreshments, games, a penny table, prizes and much more!  

Friends and family are invited to join students and staff for their traditional singing of Christmas carols each day from Monday, December 14, 2009 to Friday, December 18, 2009. Please contact the school for a schedule.

Larchwood Public School will also present "Christmas At The Movies” on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 1:30 pm and 7 pm.  Admission is a canned food item with proceeds going to the local food bank.

Levack Public School
Primary students will perform in a Christmas concert for parents at 1:30 pm on Monday, December 14, 2009.  Admission to the concert is a non-perishable food item.

On Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at 12 pm, student Parliament and selected special guests will participate in a Christmas play followed by a carol sing-a-long.

The Dawn Save the Wildlife campaign continues until Friday, December 18, 2009. Students are asked to buy Dawn dishwashing liquid and send the receipts to school to help save wildlife affected by oil spills.

Little Current Public School
Little Current Public School will host its annual Candy Cane Festival on Thursday, December 10, 2009 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.  This is a wonderful event that brings both the school and community together in the spirit of the season.  There are many activities and games that families can enjoy together, including a cake walk, pictures with Santa and the famous theme basket raffles.

Lockerby Composite School
CANCELLED – Lockerby Composite School will host its annual Christmas concert at 7 pm on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 in the McKellar Auditorium. "Holiday Hoedown" will feature Lockerby Composite School’s senior, junior and jazz bands as well as the Viking 5 Jazz Combo and the new Vocal Ensemble. Admission is by donation at the door, with a suggested donation of $5 per person or $20 per family.

Long Lake Public School
CANCELLED – Long Lake Public School will hold a Christmas Tea on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.  
RESCHEDULED –  The Long Lake Public School Christmas Tea has been rescheduled to Thursday, December 10, 2009 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Everyone is welcome to join students and staff for tea, games, draws and more.  Admission is a canned food donation for the NAPOS Food Drive.  

Markstay Public School
The students from Markstay Public School are once again taking part in the Kids Helping Kids food drive. The food donated will help local families.  Students are learning that they can make a difference in the lives of others through positive choices.

Markstay Public School will host its annual winter concert on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 1 pm.  This year’s theme is ‘Winter Wonderland’.  Everyone is welcome to attend and enjoy the talents of the students.  There will also be baking and wooden ornaments for sale.

Monetville Public School
Monetville Public School will celebrate the holiday season with an annual French River Lions Club Canned Food Drive until December 11th, 2009.  A representative group of students will participate in the Noelville Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 13th, 2009 and the Monetville Public School Eagle Christmas Concert will take place on Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 at 1:40 pm. There will be a bake sale following the concert.The school’s annual book fair will also take place on Tuesday, December 15th, 2009 from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm and Wedesday, December 16, 2009 from 11:30 am to 7:30 pm. Everyone from the French River Community is welcome to join staff and students in the festivities.

Northeastern Elementary School
Northeastern staff and students will spend the next three weeks collecting non-perishable food items for the Sudbury Food Bank as part of its Kids Helping Kids campaign with a goal of 6,000 items.

The school’s annual one-hour Christmas concert will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 and Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 11:45 am.  The concert musical entitled, "Is Santa Smarter?" features students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5.  Parents/guardians are invited to attend.  

R.H. Murray Public School
R.H. Murray Public School will host a Christmas concert on Monday, December 7, 2009 at 1 pm and 6 pm. Admission is a donation of canned food or any dry good. Warm apple cider will be served following the evening performance. Everyone is welcome.

R.L. Beattie Public School
R.L. Beattie Public School’s annual Food Drive will continue until Thursday, December 17, 2009 with items being donated to the Kids Helping Kids Program.

Santa will visit the primary students on the afternoons of Monday, December 7, 2009 and Tuesday, December 8, 2009.

R.L. Beattie will celebrate Christmas through music as each class will perform a song on Thursday, December 10, 2009 and on Friday, December 11, 2009 at 10 am. The Grade 3 to 6 choir will perform as well.  A family sing-a-long will follow each performance.  Admission is a non-perishable food item.

Sudbury Secondary School
On Tuesday, December 15, 2009 Sudbury Secondary School will host a turkey dinner at lunch time for all students.

S. Geiger Public School
S. Geiger Public School kicked off the holiday season with a  DuffleBag Theatre presentation entitled "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" on Wednesday, December 2, 2009.  The school will also host carol singing from Monday, December 14 to Thursday, December 17, 2009  in the gymnasium at 12:25 pm.  Everyone is welcome.  The annual Christmas concert will be held on Friday, December 18th, 2009 at noon.  Come along and enjoy the Christmas Bake Sale! There will also be a collection of non-perishable food donations throughout December.  

Valley View Public School
Valley View Public School will present its holiday concert on Friday, December 11, 2009 at 9:30 am and 12:45 pm.  The entire Valley View community is invited to attend.

Wanup Public School
Wanup staff and students invite everyone to celebrate the holiday season at its Festival of Lights concert on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 1:30 pm in the school gym.  To complement the concert, there will be a bake sale, a sing-a-long and a draw for an iPod Touch.

Webbwood Public School
CANCELLED – Students will participate in a Christmas concert on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 1:30 pm.
RESCHEDULED – The Webbwood Public School Christmas concert has been rescheduled to Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 1:30 pm.
(Please note: The evening concert has been cancelled.)  A non-perishable item will be accepted at the door.

A pajama breakfast with Santa will take place on Friday, December 11, 2009 from 8:45 am to 10:30 am.  The community is invited to come for breakfast and to take a picture with Santa. Tickets are $2 for students and $5 for others and can be purchased through the school until Wednesday, December 9, 2009.

The Webbwood Public School Parent Group will host a craft day on Wednesday, December 16th, all day, in the school gym.

The Webbwood Public School Choir and the Grade 2/3 class will sing at the Old Vault Restaurant on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 12:45 pm.

Wembley Public School
The community is invited to Wembley’s annual Christmas concert on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 11:30 am and 6:30 pm.  Wembley’s canned food drive is already well underway and students are working hard to support their local food bank.  Candy grams are being sold at the school so that students can share their holiday spirit with their friends and teachers.

Westmount Public School
CANCELLED – The Westmount Wizards will begin the festive season with “Noel autour du monde” on Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 1:30 pm.
RESCHEDULED – The Westmount Wizards “Noel autour du monde” concert has been rescheduled to Monday, December 14, 2009 from 1:15 pm to  2:15 pm.

The concert on Thursday, December 10th, 2009 will remain as scheduled  from 11 am to noon. Parents and guests will enjoy the singing voices of SK to Grade 3 French Immersion students.

A collection of non-perishable food items will be made for the food bank.  The school will also be hosting a bake sale.

Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School
The annual Christmas concert took place on Thursday, December 3, 2009 in the gym.  The evening featured all four of the school’s bands and special guests the No Strings Attached Community Band.  The Senior Concert Band joined No Strings for a special finale performance.

Lo-Ellen students will participate in the dramatic reading of ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust. The school is providing a woodwind ensemble created specially for this event on Sunday, December 13, 2009 at 7 pm at Sudbury Secondary School.

Don’t miss the Variety Show that will take place Thursday, December 10, 2009 to Saturday, December 12, 2009 beginning at 7 pm in the Studio Theatre at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School.  Admission is $6.

Manitoulin Secondary School
Manitoulin Secondary School will host its 40th Annual Awards Night on Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 7:30 pm.  During this evening of celebration, Manitoulin Secondary School graduates will receive over $47,000 in monetary awards – all donated by the school’s generous community.  Everyone is welcome to attend.

The Students Helping All Round Everywhere (SHARE) Committee is always busy during December.  During the week of December 1st, 2009 they kicked off their "Twelve Days of Christmas" campaign to raise donations of food, clothing, toys and money for the Manitoulin Help Centre Christmas baskets.  They are also planning activities on Thursday, December 10, 2009 for Human Rights Day.  The giving doesn’t stop! On Friday, December 11, 2009, they will host a celebratory breakfast for the most successful homeroom in the "Give Change to Make Change" drive.

A dramatic reading of ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens
Local celebrities will take centre stage on Sunday, December 13, 2009 for a dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust. The presentation will take place in the Sheridan Auditorium at Sudbury Secondary School, 85 Mackenzie Street, at 7 pm.

The presentation will feature excerpts from A Christmas Carol read by CBC Morning North Host Markus Schwabe; Northern Ontario Business Publisher Patricia Mills; Greater Sudbury Police Chief Frank Elsner; Laurentian University President Dominic Giroux; and Rainbow District School Board Director of Education Jean Hanson.

In addition to the dramatic reading, the evening will showcase talented music students from several Rainbow Schools. Performers include the Sudbury Secondary School brass ensemble, the Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School woodwind ensemble, the Lasalle Secondary School bluegrass duo, and the Lockerby Composite School jazz combo.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and $20 for a family. Tickets are available at Sudbury Secondary School, Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, Lockerby Composite School, Lasalle Secondary School, Black Cat on Durham Street and Jett Landry Music on Lasalle Blvd.
