Grade 7 and 8 students from Churchill to be relocated as new roof is installed

Grade 7 and 8 students at Churchill Public School are being relocated to a section of Lasalle Secondary School while part of the elementary school gets a new roof. The Grade 7 and 8 wing of the school will also be renovated, including new mechanical and electrical systems, windows, flooring, paint, cabinets and lockers. The work, which will take approximately five months to complete, will begin after the March break. Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 students will not be affected.
The need for the roof came to light recently as a new gymnasium was being added to Churchill Public School. “A structural engineer advised us that we had to replace part of the roof due to the additional snow load being created by the new construction,” said Director of Education Norm Blaseg.
He added: “Another section of the roof will need to be replaced within a few years. As a result, we have decided to undertake the entire project this spring. This is the safest and most cost-effective and efficient approach as we continue to revitalize Rainbow Schools to ensure that our students have the best possible learning facilities.”
Director Blaseg thanked parents/guardians and students for their understanding and assured them that the transition to their temporary location will be as smooth as possible.
A wing of Lasalle Secondary School is being prepared to accommodate the Grade 7 and 8 students and their teachers from March 17, 2014 until the end of June.
Churchill Public School will host a meeting for parents/guardians on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 7 pm to talk about the move. Parents/guardians and students will have an opportunity to tour the facilities at Lasalle Secondary School on Monday, February 3rd, 2014 at 7 pm. School board staff, including the Principal of Lasalle Secondary School and the Principal of Churchill Public School, will be on hand to answer questions as part of the transition process.
