Graffiti Eradication Day – Monday, October 16, 2006

Rainbow Schools roll up their sleeves to eradicate graffiti

Close to 400 students in Rainbow Schools will roll up their sleeves to eradicate graffiti on Monday, October 16, 2006. It’s all part of Graffiti Eradication Day in the City of Greater Sudbury.

Armed with paint and rollers, students will cover existing graffiti and commit to maintaining a graffiti free environment in and around their respective schools – not only on Graffiti Eradication Day – but in the days and weeks to come.

“Graffiti Eradication Day marks the beginning of what must be a long-term, sustainable solution,” says Rainbow District School Board Chair Dena Morrison. “Educating young people that graffiti hurts is an important part of this process. We will continue to implement graffiti education within the curriculum in Rainbow Schools – in math, reading, writing, oral communication, drama and visual arts.”

The Rainbow District School Board’s participation in the Graffiti Project ties in with character education initiatives in elementary and secondary schools. “Character education is all about instilling strong values in young people and building responsible and respectful citizens who care about the community in which they live,” says Morrison. “As leaders in learning, we recognize that we have an important role to play in developing positive attitudes and attributes in young people.”

She adds: “Helping students to learn about civic responsibility and their role in protecting the community and its environment will go a long way towards building safer, cleaner and healthier communities for all to enjoy.”
