Chelmsford Valley District Composite School has begun another chapter in fostering reading success from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The school was selected to participate in the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation’s annual Adopt-a-School fundraising program.

Every dollar donated from September 12 to October 2, 2022 at Chapters Sudbury on the Kingsway and online through the Love of Reading Foundation will go to CVDCS to enhance its library collection. The entire community is invited to support the school’s efforts to build better readers.

“The funds raised through this campaign will encourage our students to continue to work hard on their reading,” said Principal Danielle Williamson. “We are grateful to Indigo and all donors for supporting our school and our students. Proceeds will be used to purchase library books at a generous discount to reflect the wonderful diversity in our school community.”

At CVDCS, instilling in each student the ability to feel successful while reading has inspired a love of reading. Principal Williamson attributes reading success at CVDCS to a whole school approach, with classroom teachers, special education staff and educational assistants working together to model and support literacy in all grades.

Over the last two years, there have been more than 40 small reading groups throughout the school every day. Daily reading instruction and targeted reading interventions have created a school culture where reading is valued. Celebrating each student’s individual growth in reading has had a significant impact in improving confidence and skills.

Photos of students who have been awarded CVDCS Reading Star Certificates are proudly displayed in the school’s bright foyer. “These are hard earned certificates that recognize every time a student achieves an increase in their level of reading,” said Principal Williamson. “The Reading Stars celebrate individual progress and whole school success. They serve as daily reminders to keep up the great work – growth is happening.”

CVDCS students have earned more than 4,500 Reading Stars over the past two years, a tangible symbol of the entire school’s commitment to literacy for lifelong learning. “Reading is the foundation for all learning,” said Principal Williamson. “When we build strong literacy skills, we inspire a love of reading that lasts a lifetime. On behalf of Chelmsford Valley District Composite School, I would like to thank Chapters Sudbury, the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation and all donors for joining us on this journey.”
