The 2017-2018 school year marks the 10th year that the Joan Mantle Music Trust will distribute funding to secondary school music programs in Rainbow District School Board. To celebrate, the Board will host a 10th Anniversary Community Concert capping off Canada’s 150th birthday.

Everyone is invited to join the celebration on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 7 pm in the McKellar Auditorium at Lockerby Composite School, 1391 Ramsey View Court in Sudbury.

The concert will feature instrumental and vocal selections by students in Rainbow secondary school music programs, followed by a special appearance by the Borealis Jazz Quartet with Allan Walsh on saxophone, Tony Simpkin on piano, Brian Quebec on bass and Jack Broumpton on drums.

The Joan Mantle Music Trust was established in 2008 to help refresh, modernize and revitalize music programs in Rainbow District School Board. The Trust allocates funds to Rainbow schools to provide a tangible improvement in the condition of musical instruments and equipment, allowing students to achieve more in their musical studies.

“Since its inception, all of the Rainbow District School Board’s secondary schools have benefited from the Trust thanks to the generosity of donors,” says Joan Mantle Music Trust Steering Committee Chair Ralph McIntosh. “The need to revitalize music programs continues and all proceeds from the concert will go to the Trust for the benefit of students.”

He adds: “The 10th Anniversary Community Concert is our way of saying thanks and giving back to the community by showcasing the talent of students who are reaping the rewards of these new instruments. Family members and community supporters who attend the concert are sure to be impressed by the beautiful music being created in Rainbow Schools.”

The concert will feature the Lockerby Composite School Concert Band, Sudbury Secondary School’s Jazz Orchestra The Flavourz, the Confederation Secondary School Jazz Ensemble, Espanola High School’s Rock Band Rise Above, the Manitoulin Secondary School Wind Quintet, and the cast of Sudbury Secondary School’s current musical production, “The Theory of Relativity”.

The 10th Anniversary Community Concert will culminate with a special performance by the Borealis Jazz Quartet. On a night celebrating Joan Mantle’s contributions to music education in Sudbury, it is fitting that the concert feature a group made up of some of the best Jazz Educators in Northern Ontario.

The members of the Borealis Quartet continue to be Sudbury’s resident Jazz torchbearers. For over 25 years, the group has performed with major, influential Canadian Jazz artists through various concert series. They also share their talents each year at the annual Jazz Sudbury Festival.

Individually, Tony Simpkin, Allan Walsh, Brian Quebec and Jack Broumpton have been involved in music education at every level and contributed to the local music scene in many ways.

Tony Simpkin has recently retired as the music director for the CTV/Lions Club Christmas Telethon where he led the way for over 20 years.

Allan Walsh teaches saxophone and directs the Jazz ensembles at Laurentian University, and is the Artistic Director of the annual Jazz Sudbury Festival.

Brian Quebec is the “first call” jazz bassist for much of Northern Ontario and has also performed in musical productions for the Sudbury Theatre Centre and YES Theatre.

Jack Broumpton teaches music for the Rainbow District School Board and percussion at Cambrian College and Laurentian University, while also performing in the community with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra.

Together, the Borealis Jazz Quartet is pleased to be a part of the 10th Anniversary Community Concert, celebrating the positive impact of music education, the achievements of music students in Rainbow Schools, and Joan Mantle’s musical legacy.

Tickets are $20 for adults or $10 for students, and are available at all Rainbow secondary schools, at the Sudbury Theatre Centre – 705.674.8381, from Emily Caruso Parnell – 705.523.3308 ext. 8217 or [email protected], and Ralph McIntosh – [email protected].
