Lasalle canvasses community to blaze trails for fitness at Finlandia
For the seventh year, Lasalle Secondary School will host its SISU Family Walk to raise funds for fitness at Finlandia Village.
The fundraiser will kick off during the school Carnival on Thursday, September 19, 2024 followed by a community canvass in the evening.
Students will go door-to-door to visit neighbourhood residents from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm to discuss the upcoming Family Walk fundraiser and invite them to make a donation.
The Lasalle Secondary School SISU Family Walk in partnership with Sling-Choker will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
Participating dignitaries include, guest speaker, alumni and Olympic gold-medalist Robert Esmie, Deputy Mayor Al Sizer, Deputy Chief of Police Sara Cunningham, Sudbury MPP Jamie West and Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe.
Participants will embark on the seven-kilometre journey from Lasalle Secondary School to Finlandia Village’s VOIMA Hall. Upon arrival, walkers will be greeted by the Greater Sudbury Police Pipe Band followed by a delicious lunch at the Hall.
All student participants will receive a Certificate of Appreciation for their efforts.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to promoting lifelong health and wellness for all,” says Lasalle Secondary School Principal Kristina Rivard Gobbo. “We also take great pride in supporting our seniors and the community we call home.”
She adds: “Members of the public are welcome to show their SISU and join us by making a donation and/or participating in our Family Walk.”
To date, more than $150,000 has been raised for fitness equipment, outdoor trails and signage, as well as a gardening project at Finlandia.
This year’s fundraising will continue to support outdoor walking trails and equipment. A fully accessible trail system, which winds its way around the property, is developed and partially built. A portion is also signed. Future work will include self-directed exercise stops and more outdoor equipment to enhance the physical benefits of exercise while walking the trails.
“On behalf of Lasalle Secondary School, I extend a most sincere thank you to students, staff, families, and community members for supporting the health and wellness of our seniors,” says Principal Kristina Rivard Gobbo. “I would also like to thank Sling-Choker Manufacturing for their continued support of this worthwhile initiative. Kiitos!”
