Lasalle Secondary School Roots and Shoots Club makes a difference

The Lasalle Secondary School Roots and Shoots Club is ending the school year on a high note. Thanks to generous support from students, staff and the school community, the Roots and Shoots Club was able to contribute to a number of local and global causes.

“We commend our students for making a difference once again this year,” said Jeff McKibbon, Principal of Lasalle Secondary School. “We are proud of our students and appreciate their efforts. Their success, of course, was made possible by the support of many people who gave generously throughout the school year.”

Under the guidance of teacher Kristina Rivard Gobbo, the Lasalle Secondary School Roots and Shoots Club donated $2,000 to Sudbury Minga for Masaii for a school being built in Kenya. This has brought the school’s total donations to date to $4,500 for the Me to We/Free the Children Foundation. In addition, students who participated in the 30-hour famine collected $960 for World Vision.

The Roots and Shoots Club also made a difference on a local level. Pet Save received a $100 donation.  And students volunteered at the Soup Kitchen.

“Science North has invited our school to make a presentation at the Roots and Shoots Conference being held this fall,” said Principal McKibbon. “We look forward to sharing our success story with other schools who may be interested in establishing a Roots and Shoots Club.”

Lasalle Secondary School is already setting its sights on the next school year. “Some of our students will be attending the Me to We Concert in Toronto in September,” said Principal McKibbon. “This will no doubt inspire them to continue their good work.” He added: “Plans are already underway to assist Inner City Home, the Elgin Street Mission and other charities who provide invaluable services in our community.”
