Lasalle students raise funds for Light Up Costa Rica Project

Drive culminates with third annual Awake-A-Thon October 27th

Lasalle Secondary School students have been knocking on doors for the past few weeks raising funds for the Light Up Costa Rica Project. This year’s fundraising drive will culminate with the school’s third annual "Awake-A-Thon" taking place from 3 pm on Friday, October 27, 2006 to 7 am on Saturday, October 28, 2006.

“In the remote mountainous south of Costa Rica, more than 400 people in 85 homes have received one of the $120 solar/LED lighting systems purchased through this project to date,” said Dave Wiwchar, Acting Vice-Principal of Lasalle Secondary School. “We are hoping to increase that number to over 600 people when we visit Costa Rica next spring.”

During the 2006 March Break, students from Rainbow Schools traveled to Costa Rica to install 40 panels. “During the 2007 March Break, a total of 19 students will travel to Costa Rica to install another 40 to 60 systems, depending on the success of our fundraising efforts,” said Wiwchar. “The students who had the privilege of traveling to Costa Rica had a tremendous learning experience last year. I look forward to sharing this journey with a new group of students next spring.”

On behalf of Lasalle Secondary School, Dave Wiwchar thanked donors for their contributions to date. “We certainly look forward to continued support so we can build on our efforts,” he said.
