SPECIAL VIDEOS

students and staff at Lively District Secondary School launched a marathon a day for 143 days on October 1, 2015. They will run their last lap on Monday, February 8th, 2016 at 1 pm.

“Since this journey began, we have completed 13,433 laps of the track behind Lively District Secondary School,” says Principal Leslie Mantle.  “Although we had some nice weather until mid-December, we have been trekking through a snowshoe-packed path since January.”
The culmination of this innovative fundraiser will start with a small assembly in the school library
at 1 pm, followed by the final lap around the track.  “Everyone is welcome to join us and make a contribution to the Terry Fox Foundation,” says Principal Mantle.
The original Terry Fox Run lasted 143 days and covered 5,373 kilometres. Students and staff calculated that 105 laps each of their school track would be the equivalent of a marathon.
Principal Mantle commended all participants in this initiative, under the leadership of teacher Eric Bacon. The marathon a day has been a wonderful way of bringing learning to life, from the curriculum to character education.
“When we shared the marathon a day idea with the School Program Co-ordinator at the Terry Fox Foundation, she was equally as enthusiastic and has supported us every step of the way,” says Principal Mantle.
“We think what you are doing is incredible and is creating passionate, caring and generous kids,” said Lisa Armstrong, who received regular updates of the run as fall turned to winter.
“We even received a wonderful video message from Terry’s brother,” says Principal Mantle. “This was definitely a highlight for us.”
Participants charted their progress in rain, sunshine, snow and sleet. Throughout it all, they received daily physical activity while raising money for a cause that has touched the hearts of Canadians for the past 35 years.
