Lively students raise funds and awareness for Heart and Stroke

Students from Lively District Secondary School will be out in full force in their surrounding communities today (Wednesday, February 24, 2010) canvassing local businesses for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. They will be accompanied by City Councillor Jacques Barbeau along with representatives of the Greater Sudbury Police Service and the Greater Sudbury Fire Service.

“The leading cause of death in Ontario is heart disease and stroke,” says Lively District Secondary School Principal Judy Noble.  “Lively District Secondary School is pleased to help raise awareness and funds for continued research. We have been canvassing for Heart and Stroke for the past three years.”

Today, Lively District Secondary School will be calling on the business sector from 9:50 am to 10:20 am.

“Each homeroom of 25 students has been assigned one business from which to canvass,” explains Principal Noble. "Each student will be walking approximately 5 km.  If businesses would sponsor  each of the 25 students $1 per km, that would generate in excess of $3,000 for Heart and Stroke research. What a tremendous contribution from the community of Lively and Walden, with young people and business leaders working together to support a common cause!”

Following the visit to area businesses, everyone will return to Lively District Secondary School for a cheque presentation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation at 10:45 am. The event will end with a celebratory barbecue for the business community and canvassers.
