Lo-Ellen Park presents Internet use/abuse presentation on May 21st

The School Council at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School will host a presentation on the use and abuse of the Internet by teenagers on Thursday, May 21st, 2009. “Internet Technology: Promise and Peril” will take place from 6:30 pm to 8 pm at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, 275 Loach’s Road in Sudbury. The session is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

Two speakers will be featured – Constable Julie Midena of the Greater Sudbury Police Service and Rob Policicchio, an Instructional Technology Specialist from Apple Canada. A brief question and answer session will follow the keynote presentations.

“The educational use and potential misuse of Internet technology is a timely topic that will appeal to all parents/guardians in the community,” says Principal Jeff McKibbon. ““Parents will learn how they can maximize the use of the Internet and prevent its abuse. When used properly, the Internet can be a powerful learning tool.”

While the Internet provides young people with immediate access to information, parents/guardians also need to be aware of the perils of the technology. This includes access to unfiltered content, prohibited sites, and Internet addiction, which is excessive computer use that interferes with daily life.

Principal McKibbon commended the School Council at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School for organizing the Internet presentation, under the leadership of Chair Sharina Appanna.

This presentation is being funded from a Parents Reaching Out grant provided by the Ministry of Education’s Parent Engagement Office.
