Local students bring home gold, silver, and bronze at Skills Ontario

Members of Team Sudbury returned home from Skills Ontario with lots of hardware and heads held high.

Students garnered medals in nine categories at the Skills Ontario competition held May 6 to 8, 2019 in Mississauga, including two gold, three silver and four bronze. Skills Ontario is the largest event of its kind in Canada.

Team Sudbury was comprised of more than 50 students from Cambrian College, Rainbow District School Board, and Sudbury Catholic District School Board.

This is the second year in a row the three institutions have joined together to create Team Sudbury. Team Sudbury’s debut last year produced four gold medals, two silver medals, and four bronze medals.

There were even repeat winners among Team Sudbury this week. Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School students Anton Niemi Fielding and Colin Therrien repeated as silver medalists in the category of Horticulture and Landscape.

“We are so proud of our students for their outstanding achievement at the provincial level. They captured top honours among the best in Ontario,” said Rainbow District School Board Director of Education, Norm Blaseg. “Congratulations to Team Sudbury and to everyone who supported them on their journey to success.”

“Events in the skilled trades give students an opportunity to problem solve, think creatively and explore career opportunities at an early age,” said Dana Kinsella, Specialist High Skills Major and Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Co-ordinator for Rainbow District School Board. “Reaching minds through innovative and challenging learning experiences, and touching hearts by engaging students in activities that fuel their passion support student success.”

Winners of a gold medal at Skills Ontario have qualified for the Skills Canada championships May 28 and 29 in Halifax.
