Lockerby Composite School hosts Open House for Grade 8 students on January 15th

Grade 8 students and their parents/guardians are invited to an Open House at Lockerby Composite School on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at 6:45 pm. All students are invited regardless of which elementary school they currently attend.

Lockerby Composite School offers programming in English and French Immersion from Grades 9 to 12, and is home to the Science and Technology Education Program (STEP).

Reimagined two years ago, the long-established STEP program continues to motivate budding young scientists to cultivate their curiosities and capture their interests as the next generation of tech-savvy innovators.

Last year, Lockerby Composite scholars flourished on the national stage, garnering accolades at the Skills Canada National Competition and Canada-Wide Science Fair.

“The exciting changes to STEP ensures that our programming remains relevant and responsive to give our students an exceptional and enriching educational experience,” says proud Principal Ryan Lafraniere. “STEP courses run from September to June, allowing for STEP Integration Days that feature community mentorships and experiential learning opportunities in newly modernized and redesigned learning spaces. Students also become part of unique specialization studies in their senior years.”

In STEP, students learn while hypothesizing, experimenting, analyzing, and testing. STEP students develop their technological building skills, learn about the engineering design process, and are given the time to create, invent, design, and construct prototypes to solve complex problems in real-life settings.

Students who qualify for STEP receive transportation to and from school.

“During our Open House, prospective students, whether part of STEP or not, will be able to speak to current Viking students and staff while touring our facilities,” said Principal Lafraniere. “Families will see how Lockerby Composite School creates a strong sense of belonging for all students and will feel our commitment to the school experience. Everyone is welcome.”

Lockerby students enjoy a number of programs and opportunities that allow them to showcase their academic, artistic, musical and athletic expression.

The school also offers Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM) in five sectors including Health Care and Wellness, Information and Communications Technology – Computer Science, Mining Engineering, Sustainable Development, and Culinary Arts.

Lockerby Composite School is located at 1391 Ramsey View Court in Sudbury.
