Lockerby heads to provincial Reach for the Top Competition
Lockerby Composite School’s Senior Reach for the Top team will have a chance to demonstrate their razor sharp minds and lightning fast reflexes at the upcoming Ontario Championship May 9th to 12th at Centennial College in Toronto.
The Vikings recently captured their third city title in six years in a thrilling sudden death playoff victory over Lo-Ellen. Now, practices are intensifying as the Vikings prepare to square off against the top 40 teams in the province. The goal is to reach the ‘television round’ where the top ten teams converge on the studios of TV Ontario to tape the final games in this prestigious event, where the eventual champion will be crowned.
Team members include Captain Zachary Courtemanche, Mathieu Labonte, Allen Sylvestre, Justin Palkovits, Spencer Lee, Haley Sanderson, Liam Maloney, Blake Hinschberger, Ryan Johnston and Melissa Paquette.
Reach for the Top covers every subject in the Ontario curriculum. “Students answer questions on all branches of science, math, English and literature, history, geography, and politics,” says coach John Walton who teaches Co-operative Education at Lockerby. “There’s also a wide range of general knowledge questions that extend to popular culture, current events and sports.” He adds: “The format varies as well. Most are direct answer questions. Some use deductive reasoning where students deduce the answer from clues.”
In addition to practicing, Lockerby players are raising funds to help defray the cost of traveling to the provincial championship. Students will canvass businesses and hold school events in the two weeks leading up to the provincial championship.
