Lockerby Composite School has topped 436 other schools for donating the most blood during its national high school recruitment challenge, Young Blood for Life.
Sudbury, June 17, 2013— Canadian Blood Services is pleased to announce that Lockerby Composite School has topped 436 other schools for donating the most blood during its national high school recruitment challenge, Young Blood for Life. The challenge ran from September 15, 2012 to May 31, 2013. Lockerby Composite School will receive a $500 cash prize courtesy of corporate sponsor, FedEx Express Canada.
Young Blood for Life sponsored by FedEx is a student-led challenge designed to increase blood donations and first-time donors among students age 17 and over. Collectively, students across the country donated more than 20,534 units of blood. A total of 6,920 new donors gave blood within the campaign period. Students recruited teachers, friends and family to donate on behalf of their school.
A total of 17 local high schools participated in Young Blood for Life and donated more than 1,300 units of blood locally. This accounts for 26% of all blood collected in Sudbury between September 15, 2012 and May 31, 2013.
“It’s exciting to see youth across the country making such a significant contribution to Canada’s blood system,” said Susan Matsumoto, Executive Director of Donor and Clinic Services. Especially knowing that this year, Canadian Blood Services needs to recruit over 90,000 new donors to keep pace with the growing demand for blood and blood products across Canada. Young Blood for Life contributes greatly towards meeting that goal.”
FedEx is the three-year sponsor for Young Blood for Life. Their contribution helps Canadian Blood Services provide promotional materials to participating high schools and award cash prizes to those schools that give the most blood and recruit the most new donors.
