Manitoulin Island hosts NOSSA Cross-Country Running Championship

Close to 500 student athletes from Sault Ste. Marie, the North Shore, Sudbury and North Bay will converge on Manitoulin Island on Friday, October 26, 2012 for the NOSSA Cross-Country Running Championship. The event takes place at the Manitoulin Island Country Club, 25 Golf Course Rd., in Gore Bay from 11 am to 3:30 pm. A total of 33 secondary schools are participating.

“We have approximately 40 volunteers who are working together to make this a memorable event, including staff, students, parents, community members and retired teachers,” said Convenor Jim Stringer, a teacher at Manitoulin Secondary School.

Stringer, who has been coaching cross-country running and track and field for the past 18 years, said he is excited to be hosting young athletes from across the North. “This is my third NOSSA cross-country meet,” he said. “Providing this opportunity to students continues to be as rewarding as ever.”

Students will compete in the following divisions – Midget Girls, Midget Boys, Junior Girls, Junior Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys. Awards will be presented at 3:30 pm. First place individuals and teams will receive medals. Ribbons will be awarded to second to sixth place individuals as well as second and third place teams.

The top two teams as well as the best four individual athletes overall will qualify for the OFSAA Championship. The provincial event takes place on Saturday, November 3rd, 2012 in Brampton.
