A Grade 10 student from Manitoulin Secondary School will be among the participants at the Royal Canadian Legion Regional Public Speaking Competition in Kapuskasing on Saturday, April 2, 2011.

Elizabeth Oswald of Tehkummah won the right to compete at the regional level after capturing top honours in the Senior Division at the District Competition held in Sturgeon Falls on March 20, 2011. She competed against speakers from Wawa, Sault Ste. Marie, Espanola, Manitoulin, Sudbury, North Bay and Parry Sound.

Principal Laurie Zahnow says, “MSS is very proud of Liz, and is pleased that the high school has revitalized Public Speaking. We wish her the best of luck at the competition in Kapuskasing and beyond.”

After impressing the judges with her speech on "Parent-teen relationships," Liz will now be vying for the opportunity to represent Northern Ontario at the Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Public Speaking Competition in Orillia on April 30, 2011.

Liz will be in good company in Kapuskasing. Amber Wahl, a Grade 3 student at Central Manitoulin Public School who is also from Tehkummah, will compete in the Primary Division with her speech on “Speeches”.

“We have been a great support to each other as we move through the competitions,” says Liz Oswald. “The next level of competition will be a wonderful learning experience, and I would certainly welcome the opportunity to participate in the all-Ontario finals.”

Rainbow District School Board Chair Tyler Campbell congratulated Liz on being the Senior Division champion at the district level. “We are proud of Liz for her outstanding achievement and wish her continued success as she competes at the regional level.” He added: “In Liz Oswald, we have another great ambassador for Rainbow Schools.”
