What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?
Math, Science and Technology Olympics on March 19th
Grade 7 and 8 students in Rainbow Schools are heading to the Olympics – the Math, Science, and Technology Olympics that is! It all takes place on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at Science North in Sudbury.
"Over 200 students will be taking part in this event, which has become an annual tradition for Rainbow District School Board," says Board Chair Judy Hunda. "Students will apply what they learn in the classroom in a fun and creative way thanks to Science North, our partners in education. We are fortunate to have such an exceptional facility right here in our own backyard, giving students access to leading edge learning."
In the morning, students will answer questions to test their knowledge in math, science and technology. "A dedicated team of teachers from the Rainbow District School Board have worked diligently to prepare the questions," says Sofia Gallagher, Curriculum Coordinator for Science and Technological Studies. "At the end of the day, teachers will tally the correct answers to identify the winners."
In the early afternoon, students will participate in a construction challenge. "This is an on-site event prepared and evaluated by the staff at Science North," says Gallagher. "It usually involves building a structure of some type with simple materials such as straws and popsicle sticks. There is a catch. The structure must be used to accomplish a task."
The event will end with an awards ceremony that parents/guardians and members of the public are welcome to attend. The awards ceremony will begin at 2:30 pm in the Inco Cavern.
"All participating students receive a t-shirt with the Math, Science, and Technology Olympics logo," says Gallagher. "They receive the t-shirts in advance so they can personalize them for their particular team. Many students tie-dye the shirts or add their school colours, bringing a bit of artistic flair to this educational experience."
